As far as vegetables go, the artichoke is one of the most intriguing out there. With its delicious savory-sweet heart and beautiful armor-like exterior, the artichoke is technically not a vegetable at all but the bud from a flowering plant from the thistle family. The edible portion of the plant consists of the flower buds before the flowers come into bloom.

Artichokes are beneficial for our body for many reasons: the ability to reduce dangerous body-wide inflammation, their nourishing effect on the digestive tract and liver, their strong tie to preventing serious conditions such as cancer and heart disease, and of course their great taste and versatility in recipes too.

Health Benefits of Artichoke

Artichokes help prevent cancer

Artichokes are loaded with many vital antioxidants and phytonutrients, such as quercetin, rutin, gallic acid, and cynarine that our body requires to combat free radicals and to slow the onset of diseases.

These active components have been shown in studies to reduce the growth of cancerous cells and therefore to prevent cancerous tumors from growing and spreading.

Detoxes the liver and digestive system

A particular substance found in artichokes called “cynarine” has been shown to positively stimulate the production of bile, which is produced by the liver and ultimately responsible for enabling digestion and helping with the absorption of nutrients.

Artichoke benefits digestive disorders because of its high fiber content, ability to reduce inflammation, and nourishing effect on the gut lining the stomach and liver.

Help control diabetes

Due to its rich fiber content, artichokes can help keep blood sugar levels stable and in control, avoiding spikes and dips in insulin that can lead to several metabolic problems. The fiber in artichokes allows the body to absorb glucose more slowly because fiber is a substance that does not require insulin for its digestion.

Fiber also does not count towards the amount of glucose or carbohydrates you consume.

Improve skin health and appearance

Your skin receives nutrients i.e. vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, etc. through the ingested food. They ultimately show up in your appearance because they make the basic building blocks of your skin.

Antioxidants, in the form of minerals and vitamins, help to prevent your skin from becoming dry, aging, and losing its texture and natural appearance.

Fight cardiovascular disease

Consuming artichoke extracts has been correlated with calming inflammation in the body, reducing unhealthy cholesterol levels, and improving blood flow.

The active ingredient cynarine found in artichokes is known as one of the best remedies for vasodilation and bringing elevated cholesterol back to a healthy level.

Helps with weight loss

Artichokes are rich in fiber, which is crucial for several important functions in the body. They keep the digestive and cardiovascular systems running smoothly and relieve health disorders like diarrhea and constipation.

Artichokes play an important role in helping the body to detoxify itself from waste, toxins, and extra cholesterol and also facilitate liver function to make us feel energetic after a meal.
