The gardens are great. A garden can give you so much from nice-smelling flowers to delicious fruits and healthy vegetables. If you’re thinking about how to start your garden, keep the following tips in mind.

1.    Get a Good Foundation

Check carbon and nitrogen levels. If your soil is not good, I recommend you start with just one square foot of garden. Get a plastic or wooden box and put fresh topsoil from the market, adding composted and mulched leaves to create a good foundation.

2.    Make Sure You Have Good Drainage

Your plants won’t survive if you don’t have good drainage. In gardening, like so many other things, water is both creator and destroyer. Proper drainage ensures the right amount of water flows through your garden.

3.    Provide Enough Sunlight

As you may remember from your school lessons, the Sun is important for plants. Without proper sunlight, you can’t expect your garden and the lovely things inside it to grow. Read the instructions given on the back of the seed packet for more information (or ask the vendor from whom you bought the seeds).

4.    Add Variety

A garden with variety is a garden with beauty. Moreover, if you have different types of plants, it helps with soil quality and defends against pests. Insects probably won’t come back to your garden since they won’t be sure what they’ll find in the garden because of the variety of things growing there. This is the reason farmers rotate their crops!

5.    Plant at the Proper Time

Timing is crucial. Plants too soon and early spring’s frost will freeze the plants. Plant too early, the plants will be too weak, and the sun will wither them down. Again, check the seed packet for details or ask the vendor.

6.    Use Healthy Transplants

If you’re transplanting, buy quality plants. They’ll be worth the money. Plus, provide plenty of water or the plants won’t survive. Some people may tell you that the growing season is not too long, but you need to put them into the ground and the transplants will proliferate.

7.    Detect Pests as Early as Possible

As you see your plants grow, also keep an eye out for pests. Watch out for warning signs such as leaves with holes or chewed leaves. If you see that rodents or some other animal are attacking your plants, you can set up a net to keep them at bay. Or even use a radio to scare and distract all kinds of attackers. A blood meal is especially great at deterring deer.

8.    Provide Enough Nutrients

Once the seeds are planted and thriving, don’t forget to maintain a healthy flow of nutrients. Compost leaves, kitchen scraps, and all composts with plenty of nitrogen will make your garden bloom beautifully. You can also use blood meal and fish emulsion based on the type of plants you are growing.

9.  Fight the Urge to Overplant

Many first-time gardeners get too excited and take on more work than they can handle. I advise you to start small and resist overplanting. As you learn more about gardening through experience, you can grow your garden without setbacks. A little patience will soon result in a beautiful and healthy garden.

10.  Prevent Weeds instead of having to Cure them

When it comes to weeds, prevention is better than the cure. A little care every day can save you from lots of trouble and hard work. You can use things like the natural herbicide of vinegar and corn gluten meal to stop weeds dead in their tracks.

There’s nothing like having a beautiful garden that you can call your own. Keep these tips in mind and you can get that soon enough.
